Unionist Unity

LETTERS – Belfast News Letter   25th May 2010

Dear Sir,

I was alarmed to read the report of the speech made by the Grand Master, Robert Saulters, on Friday evening last, in which he calls for “unionist unity”.

Has Mr Saulters forgotten that he and the leadership of the Orange Institution contributed to that DISUNITY by supporting one unionist party in their opposition to the Belfast Agreement (1998)?

Has Mr Saulters forgotten that he personally, in the recent past, endorsed one particular party by signing their nomination papers?

Given the serious embarrassment, felt throughout the membership, caused by the recent statement from Grand Lodge calling for demonstrations in opposition to the Pope’s visit to England and Scotland, Mr Saulters would be better to devote his time to the healing the wounds within the Orange Institution.

Given that these wounds are self-inflicted the very words he uses to apply to political parties should apply to the Orange Institution, who more than ever are in need of “better joined up thinking”, and “will have to make concessions and set aside differences”.

Yours etc.

Brian Kennaway (Rev)
