Orange Order actions betray its principles

I was somewhat confused when I read that the County Grand Orange Lodge of Belfast are objecting to the building of four houses and six apartments by Choice Housing on Clifton Street, particularly when Choice Housing claim that they consulted “extensively” with officials. (News April 10)

I am further confused when I reflect on the core values of the Orange Institution which state:

“We must all endeavour to disarm suspicion and antagonism.  This can best be done by setting a good example in our daily lives, by living up to the high principles of the Order so that every section of the community will be compelled to admit that there is something in the Orange Society that elevates a man and raises him above the average of humanity. Something that makes him a better man morally, socially and intellectually.”

Surely this is a great opportunity to witness to the core values of Orangeism – “It is Christ-centred, Bible-based, Church-grounded. By it we are moulded in character and conduct.”
